Watching the news this evening and I find I am in tears. There is a story on the networks about a man in Toronto who took his van and purposely mowed down people walking along the sidewalk. They were shopping, or lunching.....or just enjoying the day. Now a number are dead and others are injured. Witnesses say he just went on and on and on and aimed for people.
Dave came into the room and I told him what was being reported and said "This is not the world we grew up in." It's just so sad.....it's just so pervasive.....no matter what you decide to do, go to a movie, or a concert, or school, or walk along the sidewalk in a major city......it's just not safe anymore.
And I realize there is a small chance, statistically, this will happen to me....or my loved ones....or you...but still. And I realize that good people far out number the "bad". It's just so damn sad.
What the hell is going on......
No this is not the world we grew up in. We were blessed in grow up with our doors unlocked, keys in the car, etc.
ReplyDeleteBut there is another perspective that helps me during these times. When we were growing up we were not as aware of all of the terrible things that were taking place elsewhere. In this modern world we have become more aware of people behaving badly, and instead of "pranks" young people now have role models of far more evil things one can do to another. There is a copycat element at work here just as there was in school when I was a boy. What is different is the ideas people are imitating, and the weapons they have easy access to.
There is still so much good in the world, but perhaps we do not find it on the nightly news.
Be at peace and know that you are safe in this moment. All is well.
I've been searching for data on this theme for some time. I'm glad this one is so extraordinary. Keep up the superb work Shoppers
